Anybody who has read The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett?
How does the secret garden act as a symbol and what does it represent for Mary and Colin?

Mary recognizes herself in Ben and the robin. What does she have in common with Ben and the robin?

Put quite simply, I think the garden starts off as abandoned and neglected, as both Mary and Colin were in their ways. The gradual tending of the garden and its blossoming parallels their return to spiritual and physical health.
I'm not sure what Mary has in common with Ben and the robin - it's a while since I read it so don't remember the details. Perhaps Ben is as down-to-earth as Mary is; and the robin is inquisitive.
When Mary first sees the robin redbreast, the reader is struck by a number of similarities between them: like her, he began life as an orphan; like her, he finds a haven in the secret garden; like her, he began to seek out friendship once he lost his family and came to realize he was lonely. The friendliness of the little bird both helps Mary to recognize that she is lonely and to assuage that loneliness.
