Facial Fillers
The most
popular non-surgical treatment for plumping up lips and reducing the
appearance of lines, creases and wrinkles are facial fillers. Also known
as “injectables" or "dermal fillers" this category of products are
typically temporary hyaluronic acid solutions, a naturally occurring
chemical in the body. They are designed to work by replacing lost
volume in targeted zones which may have developed because of weight
loss, sun exposure and the old fashioned aging process.
There are many different kinds and brands of fillers on the market. Each is suited to for specific needs, that’s why your consultation is so important. During that visit, they will determine which product or combination of products will work best with your skin, to help you achieve your desired results
The most common facial fillers are hyaluronic acid, which is the primary ingredient of Perlane, Restylane, and Juvederm,. The longer lasting fillers like Artefill and Radiesse use synthetic microspheres and collagen.
Here’s a brief explanation of the fillers and their optimum use.
One of the most popular of all the fillers, Restylane
is an FDA-approved cosmetic filler that’s been used by over a million
people to fill in lines and wrinkles. Restylane is derived from
hyaluronic acid, which binds with water, making it an extremely safe
choice for a filler.
There are two versions of this product: original Restylane, intended for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements, and Perlane, for underlying facial contours, such as cheeks and chin. It’s also used to correct deep folds, and for volume in lip augmentation. Restylane gives you instantaneous and pain-free results. Restylane injections to be effective for up to 6 months for lips and 12 months for facial lines and creases.
Perlane is the newest member of
the Restylane family. The main difference between Restylane and Perlane
is that Perlane’s hyaluronic acid molecules are larger, which allows it
to work on building up deeper areas, increasing volume, and raising the
creases and wrinkles from deep in the skin. Perlane works like a volume
filler, making it perfect for larger areas like the naso labial (nose to
mouth) folds, smile lines, sunken cheeks, and for lip enhancement.
Studies show that the effects of Perlane last about six months.
Radiesse was developed to offer very long term
effects. Made with components similar to those used in dental implants
surgery, Radiesse doesn’t create allergic reactions. It’s most popularly
used to re-sculpt and lift cheeks, smooth the jawline, and lifting the
brow. It’s also used to re-shape noses where it’s sometimes called the
non surgical nose job. The long lasting effects of Radiesse are still
coming in but it lasts from one to up to 5 years.
Sculptra, cause the body to produce new collagen.
It’s sometimes called the "liquid facelift," because it fills in both
wrinkles and stimulates new tissue growth, giving the face an overall
fuller and more youthful appearance. It’s a great choice to fill in
those areas where fat loss has occurred, which are typically the cheeks,
the neck and the hollows under the eyes. Sculptra is made from a safe
synthetic material that is tolerated by the body and creates a gradual
and significant increase in skin thickness and softness. The
natural-looking improvements appear gradually over a few weeks time, so
you need to be patient. On the other hand, Sculptra lasts for two years
or more because it causes the body to make its own collagen. Sculptra
achieves excellent results in treating all parts of the face including
the areas around the eyes and lips, between the mouth and nose, cheeks
and neck. It adds volume to the cheeks, to folds around the chin, and to
hollow areas around the eyes.
From the makers of BOTOX®, Juvederm is the longer
lasting hyaluronic acid filler.
Juvederm is uses smooth gel delivery system that is easily accepted by
the skin, reducing the chance of any dimpling, and creates a natural
look and feel, that last 6 months or longer. It may also reduce the
discomfort which may occur during the injection process.
BOTOX® is perhaps the most popular of the injectable
cosmetic enhancements, but it is not a filler. BOTOX® is actually an
extremely weak neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes wrinkles and fine
lines in the face, neck rings, and crow's feet. It’s the classic
treatment for the eleven lines between the eyes. BOTOX® was FDA approved
in 2002 for cosmetic use and since then has had over 1 million patients.
BOTOX® is often used with fillers for a completely re-freshed look.
Fillers plump the skin and BOTOX® relaxes the wrinkles. Unlike fillers,
it takes about 4-7 days to see the results of BOTOX®, however there is
virtually no pain, bruising or swelling after the injection. In addition
to facial wrinkles, there are many other uses for BOTOX®, including
treatment of hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating), for underarms and
hands. The effects of BOTOX® last for 3-5 months
